Sound is important in giving the audience an atmospheric effect and emphasising the actions of many of the main characters and what they have to say. They use sound in a variety of different ways.
Diagetic sound: This is sound created in the film such as dialogue between characters.
Non-Diagetic sound: This is sound created out of the film such as special effects, sirens, explosions and crashes.
Synchronous: This is when music or sound effects are in sync (happening in time with the film) i.e loud music or the exploding sound happening at the time of the explosion.
Asynchronous: This is the opposite of synchronous. Music or sound effects aren't in sync with the film.
Score: A song written for the purpose of a film.
Different sounds create different effects. Ambient sounds like wind, traffic and water create bigger environments instead of there being no sound with the film. Overall sound plays an important roll in the experience of watching films and creates an atmospheric effect for the audience.
